January Update: Locking Addresses/Ready to Print
over 1 year ago – Tue, Jan 31, 2023 at 08:53:10 AM

Hi everyone,

2023 certainly started busily here at Roll & Play Press! We have been hard at work getting the wonderful Sci-Fi Toolkits ready for print. Read on to find out more – starting with an important note on shipping addresses.

Locking Addresses

The shipping address in your BackerKit pledge manager will be locked at the end of the week – Friday 3rd February (13:00 GMT). This is the address that we will use when it is time to ship your physical rewards.

If you expect your address may change over the next couple of months, we strongly recommend you update the address in your pledge manager to one that you know you will be able to collect your rewards from (such as a workplace, relative or friend). Please make any necessary changes before the addresses are locked on Friday. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to amend your address after this date.

If you have any questions, email us using [email protected], and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Project Progress

Proofreading complete

Since returning from our festive break, we have been carrying out final creative checks on the books and rewards. This has been an intensive, but hugely satisfying process. Everything has now been proofread internally, and by external readers who can offer us fresh eyes and perspectives on the text. We've been making small changes and refinements in order to bring you the best products we possibly can.

I'm now happy to say that the proofreading stage of the project is complete, and we're ready to print!

Print preparation

Over the next week or two, the team will officially send all files to print. This will involve confirming technical specifications with the printers and conducting quality control checks on samples as required. Follow us on social media to see glimpses of samples as we get them!

PDF preparation

Once the files have been sent to the printers, we can begin the process of converting both the books and other rewards into digital PDF formats, including printer-optimised versions. This process will be done over the next few weeks in February, ready to fulfil in March.

Packaging and fulfilment

We're still on track to begin fulfilling physical and digital rewards in March. Kay and Pasha are collaborating closely with our distribution partners to ensure all your products get to you safely and swiftly once this process begins.

The Open Gaming License 1.0a

As discussed in our last update, this project is unaffected by ongoing developments concerning the OGL. However, this has been a turbulent time for many creators in the TTRPG community, including ours. The support we have received from our backers over the past few weeks has been greatly appreciated.

I look forward to being able to share another exciting update next month!

All the best,

Beth

Regarding the Open Gaming Licence (OGL 1.0a)
over 1 year ago – Thu, Jan 19, 2023 at 11:11:50 AM

Hi all,

Following recent events in the TTRPG industry relating to the Open Gaming Licence (OGL 1.0a), we wanted to update you on what this means for the two Roll & Play Press Kickstarter projects currently in production.

If you are unfamiliar with the OGL 1.0a, or the current news surrounding it, this article provides some context. The latest statement from Wizards of the Coast, explaining that they intend to launch a public consultation phase on the future of the licence, is published here.

Fortunately, we do not expect either of our in-progress projects to be significantly impacted by potential changes. However, as this situation is ongoing, we will continue to discuss our position with legal counsel as required.

More information on the individual projects can be found below.

Roll & Play: Sci-Fi Toolkits

Our Sci-Fi Toolkits do not use OGL 1.0a or any other licence; therefore, they are unaffected by recent events and remain on track for delivery this March. Pre-orders also remain open.

These books were specifically designed to be system neutral; suitable for all sci-fi settings, including homebrew worlds. They will provide inspiration and content for adventures in any system you choose, whether that be Starfinder, Mothership, Alien or one of the many other amazing sci-fi TTRPGs out there. We're looking forward to sending these books and PDFs to backers in March.

One-Shot Wonders

We do not expect that changes to the OGL will have a significant impact on the content in One-Shot Wonders. Much like our other products, we had always intended for One-Shot Wonders to be useful to players regardless of their preferred systems, and it has been developed with this in mind.

The fantasy one-shots in this book do, on occasion, make brief reference to D&D 5E monster mechanics. Given the ongoing uncertainty regarding OGL 1.0a, we are consulting with legal advisors on how best to include this information. The impact of this is unlikely to result in major changes to the format you have already seen in the sample pages, but may require some extra work from us.

Like many creators, particularly those with small teams, the main consequence of the OGL 1.0a situation has been that time and resources that would have otherwise been used to work on content have been redirected to reviewing our position. But, we have an excellent track record for timely delivery of Kickstarter projects, and are pressing ahead with One-Shot Wonders with the same level of dedication. We will have a better idea of whether there is any impact on our estimated delivery date of October 2023 once we are further along with our discussions with legal counsel and as the situation develops. We will continue to keep you updated in our regular updates.

Speaking of updates, we will be sending out our usual project news in the next couple of weeks. We have exciting things to share from both projects!

We want to say a huge thank you to the community for the overwhelming support that has been shown to third-party creators like us during these turbulent few weeks. The Roll & Play Press team is excited to continue making awesome projects that you can use in all your TTRPG games for many years to come!

All the best,

Kay

December Campaign Log: Preparing for 2023
over 1 year ago – Sat, Dec 17, 2022 at 12:05:51 AM

Hi everyone,

Welcome to our last update of 2022! Wow, what a year it has been since we launched this campaign in March. We have loved working on the Roll & Play: Sci-Fi Toolkits and can't wait to share them with you next year.

Creative progress

The random tables for both books are now officially complete! It has been a mammoth task writing and designing the hundreds of tables across both toolkits, but we are so pleased with how the books have come together. You're going to absolutely love them both – we do!

The team is now busy creating the final, supplementary content of the books, including introductions, chapter openers and credits. We're also giving both toolkits and the other rewards a thorough read and review internally, making any changes as needed. Our external proofreader is lined up and ready to start reviewing in early January.

We are still on track to begin fulfilment in March 2023!

Festive break

After a busy year, the Roll & Play Press team will be taking a break over the Christmas period. We'll be away from 24th December and will return on the 3rd January. Kickstarter comments and messages won't be monitored during this time, so we will respond to any queries when we're back.

If you have any questions about your pledge or this project, you can also email us using [email protected], and we will get back to you in January.

Until then, we hope you stay safe and well, and have a wonderful holiday season. Wishing you a happy and healthy 2023, filled with many sci-fi adventures!

With love from Sam, Kay, Beth and Pasha.

November Campaign Log: Writing Progress
over 1 year ago – Sun, Nov 27, 2022 at 11:23:06 AM

Hi everyone,

Hope you are all well. Here's our monthly update on the Roll & Play: Sci-Fi Toolkits!

Random tables

We have been working hard to complete all the pages of random tables that will feature across the two books. There is only a handful of these left to be done, so we are happy to report that within the next two weeks the writing stage of the project will be COMPLETE!

Once work on the random tables comes to an end, the team will spend the following few weeks creating the supplementary pages (including introductions, contents pages, chapter openers and the all-important backer credits). We'll also give both books and the other rewards a thorough read and review internally, making any changes as needed. The books will then be sent for a final external proofread and review in the new year.

Physical fulfilment planning

Following the delivery of physical samples last month, there is lots of important work going on behind-the-scenes to assess and confirm our packaging needs and plans for distribution. This involves lots of measuring, weighing and calls with suppliers to get everything in place for our March 2023 fulfilment.

Upcoming convention: Dragonmeet

We're heading to our final convention of 2022! Dragonmeet takes place on Saturday 3rd December in London (UK). We'll be in the Lower Hall on Stand 50 showing off lots of our RPG tools, including samples of the Roll & Play: Sci-Fi Toolkits. If you're going to Dragonmeet next weekend, come and say hi!

If you have any questions about your pledge or this project, email us using [email protected], and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

See you next time for our final update of 2022!

October Campaign Log: Early Samples
over 1 year ago – Wed, Nov 02, 2022 at 01:56:11 PM

Hi everyone,

Hope you are well. We continued making lots of progress on the Roll & Play: Sci-Fi Toolkits throughout October, and received the first physical samples of the draft books. (It was also Sam's birthday - Happy Birthday Sam 🥳)

Hooray, physical samples!

The process of sourcing and assessing early physical samples has now begun. We've started by ordering samples of the toolkits, limited edition covers and planet briefing document. It's great to see the rewards come to life on the page after existing on computer screens for so long! Hopefully these photos give you a little taster of what's to come.

Last weekend, we took the Roll & Play: Sci-Fi Toolkits samples along to MCM London Comic Con and featured them on our stand. It was great to meet so many of you there, and to receive lots of positive comments about how the books were looking. Take a look at our stand below!

We are due to wrap up writing and design in early January, then spend just over a month reviewing all the rewards with the help of our eagle-eyed proofreader. The books and all the rewards will then be printed and optimised for PDF viewing, with fulfilment on track to begin in March.

If you have any questions about your pledge or this project, email us using [email protected], and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

We'll be back in touch at the end of November, see you then!
